Reasoning over Spatial Orientation Relations Using Rules

چکیده
Representation of spatial information for the Semantic Web often involves qualitative defined information (i.e., information described using natural language terms such as “Left”), since precise arithmetic descriptions using coordinates and angles are not always available. A basic aspect of spatial information is directional relations, thus embedding directional spatial relations into ontologies along with their semantics and reasoning rules is an important practical issue. This work proposes a new representation for directional spatial information in ontologies by means of OWL properties and reasoning rules in SWRL embedded into the ontology. The proposed representation is based on the combination of object orientations (e.g., same direction or opposite) and cone shaped directional relations of positions using an egocentric reference (e.g., left or right of an object). The proposed representation is to the best of our knowledge a novel one, and in this work, the proposed representation is analysed, implemented and evaluated.

Spatial Rules for Capturing Qualitatively Equivalent Configurations in Sketch maps
Sketch maps are an externalization of an individual’s mental images of an environment. The information represented in sketch maps is schematized, distorted, generalized, and thus processing spatial information in sketch maps requires plausible representations based on human cognition. Typically only qualitative relations between spatial objects are preserved in sketch maps, and therefore proces...
متن کاملQualitative Spatial Reasoning about Line Segments
Representing and reasoning about orientation information is an important aspect of qualitative spatial reasoning. We present a novel approach for dealing with intrinsic orientation information by specifying qualitative relations between oriented line segments, the simplest possible spatial entities being extended and having an intrinsic direction. We identify a set of 24 atomic relations which ...
متن کاملQualitative Spatial Reasoning Using Real Algebraic Geometry
Commonsense reasoning is a major challenge in Artificial Intelligence (AI). As qualitative descriptions comprise a great deal of our everyday language, commonsense reasoning is concerned with developing and processing such qualitative representations. This applies especially to commonsense reasoning about space, where spatial objects are in particular characterized by their spatial relations to...
متن کاملOn the Utilization of Spatial Structures for Cognitively Plausible and Efficient Reasoning
We present an approach to qualitative spatial reasoning which is based on directional orientation information as available through perceptual processes. Qualitative orientations in 2-dimensional space are given by the relation between a point and a vector. The paper presents our basic iconic notation for spatial orientation relations which exploits the spatial structure of the domain and explor...

Nowadays, geospatial information systems (GIS) are widely used to solve different spatial problems based on various types of fundamental data: spatial, temporal, attribute and topological relations. Topological relations are the most important part of GIS which distinguish it from the other kinds of information technologies. One of the important mechanisms for representing topological relations...
